How to regenerate a featured image on a post

NOTE: If you would like to resize/recrop all images across your blog as part of a single process, please refer to this Help Desk article.

This Help Desk article explains  how to regenerate a featured image for a single blog post. If you have switched themes and run the Regenerate Thumbnails process, there's still a chance that every now and again, the process will miss an old image. Down the line, you may notice, and wish to regenerate a thumbnail size for that single featured image, versus running the Regenerate Thumbnails process for your entire media library.

The instructions below show you how to regenerate featured images for the WordPress Classic Editor, and Block Editor. You will need to have the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin installed and activated in order for these instructions to work.

CLASSIC EDITOR:

1. Identify which post contains the featured image at hand, and load the post editor.

2. On the right side of the post editor, look for the Featured Image box. It will look similar to this:

3. Click on the image, then look for the blue Regenerate Thumbnails button on the right. In the window that loads, check off Skip regenerating existing correctly sized thumbnails (faster). You can leave the Delete thumbnail files for old unregistered sizes unchecked.

4. Next, click on the large blue Regenerate Thumbnails button.

Here is a short video showing the above two steps:

5. You'll notice that any image sizes which previously had a red X next to them will now show a green check mark, indicating the image size has been regenerated. If any still have a red X, this indicates the original image uploaded is not large enough to fill the media container sizes at hand.

6. Click the blue Done! Click here to go back button. You can now save/update your post, and you're all set!

 BLOCK EDITOR:

1. Identify which post contains the featured image at hand, and load the post editor.

2. On the right side of the post editor, look for the Featured Image box. It may be collapsed; click on the tab in order to expand the feature. It will look similar to this:
